Lucky Finish For Lucky Beau

Apr 30, 2017

Lucky Beau continued the excellent run of late for Dean Binaisse with a victory in the APCO Service Stations Maiden Plate over 1300m at Geelong on Sunday. It was the three-year-old's first win at just his seventh start.

Lucky Beau jumped away quickly from the wide gate under Mark Zahra, then steadied in behind the leaders three-wide, he was eased around the turn and then hit the lead down the straight. Lucky Beau gave it his all to hold on from Call To Justice on the outside and The Banana Stand on the inside making it a photo finish.

"They went steady and he was travelling comfy but when I went for him I didn't get right away from them and to be honest I thought I got run down so he's done a good job to sit wide and still hold on at the end," Zahra said after the race.

When asked if he was worried he was travelling that wide Zahra said "not really, you draw wide so you sort of expect something like this but when they were going steady I was able to sit really comfortable and the track being a bit soft I don't think its a big disadvantage to be a bit off the fence today."

Trainer Dean Binaisse was thrilled to see the colt break through with four placing's coming from his first six starts.

β€œHe’s always been a nice horse but he has just been a bit unlucky,” said Binaisse.

"There were a couple of races he should have won but had things go against him like a bad ride or not being able to get out and things like that.

It was also great that the Melbourne based owners were on course today and they had a great day cheering him home although there were some tentative moments there at the end waiting for the photo.

"I thought Lucky Beau did a really good job considering he was ridden against his normal pattern and he sat three deep with no cover and was out on his feet at the 100 meter mark but still kept going and gave it everything right to the line.

"I'm looking forward to placing him in the right race in the next start."

Lucky Beau is by Bradbury's luck and is out of the city winning Hennesy mare, Hennessy Beau. He was purchased at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale by Binaisse for $72,500.
